E2 Test Prep TOEFL Video Review
For a peek into the E2Language TOEFL prep course, watch our engaging video review below. In this video, we reveal the pros and cons of the E2 TOEFL course in several areas that are key to your success on the TOEFL iBT.
E2Language TOEFL Overview
The E2Language TOEFL curriculum consists of both a self-paced component and a live class component. Users of the course can also get an optional 1-on-1 tutoring with a TOEFL expert.
These different teaching modes offered by E2Language makes the E2 TOEFL course appealing to students with different learning preferences.
The E2 TOEFL course line-up consists of three packages: Express, Medal, and Intensive packages.
- Express packages have a 3-month access period and include a maximum of 1 short-length practice test.
- Medal packages have access periods that start at 6 months and go up to 12 months and include a maximum of; three 1-on-1 expert teacher tutorials; 2 consultation sessions for the TOEFL iBT exam; and 12 combined speaking and writing assessments.
- Intensive packages have a 3-month access period and is tailored to students who want to focus on either the speaking or writing sections. These packages include 4 expert assessments for the speaking and writing sections.
E2Language TOEFL prep course similarities
So, how are these packages different? Let's break that down below:
- Lessons and Resources: All packages provide access to the same self-paced course material and live TOEFL classes. These course materials have on-demand video lessons and short practice questions for all 4 sections of the TOEFL iBT.
- Support feature upgrades: Regardless of the package you pay for, users can always purchase additional support features on the platform at any point in the future.
- Score increase: None of the E2 TOEFL packages offer any score increase guarantees after completion of the course.
E2Language TOEFL prep course distinctions
Now, let's show you how these packages are different.
- Number of live class registrations: Only the medal packages have unlimited registrations for the live classes. All other packages are limited to a maximum of 25 live class registrations.
- Included support features: Buyers of the Medal packages receive between 1 - 3 one-on-one tutoring appointments and 2 - 6 graded assessments for the speaking and writing sections each. In addition, there is a pre-exam, and post-exam consultation session included in some of the Medal packages.
- Access periods: Access to the course material is given for 6 - 12 months on the Medal package, while on other packages it's limited to just 3 months.
- Short-length practice test: All the Medal packages include a short-length practice test with questions from all 4 sections of the TOEFL iBT. This short practice test is absent in all the Intensive packages, and present in one of the Express packages.
On the E2 TOEFL course platform, you will find 28 on-demand video lessons focused on the types of questions and tasks in each TOEFL section, as well as strategies for answering these questions. In addition, there are 20 video lessons on English grammar and vocabulary usage as a supplement.
The videos on the platform are typically under 10 minutes long and feature a combination of presentation slides and footage of an instructor speaking to the camera. The videos can be sped up or slowed down to a pace that's preferable for you.
However, there are no closed-captions or transcript features. You can see the quality of the video production in the image below.
Although the TOEFL video lessons are taught by different E2Language instructors, they all follow the same format. At the start of each video, the instructor will introduce the type of TOEFL question or task to be discussed.
Next, the instructor will display and read off a presentation slide that shows strategies for answering the question. An example of the question type is then presented, where the instructor will show you how to apply the strategies mentioned earlier.
Finally, a timed practice question or task is then displayed on the screen, while the instructor takes a short break. The videos then wrap up with the instructor answering this practice question and leaving you with short tips and tricks to remember when attempting these question types or tasks.
Accompanying each video lesson in the course material are a few practice questions (found in the reading listening learning modules) and activities (found in the speaking and writing learning modules) for you to test your understanding of the concepts introduced in the lesson.
While these video lessons do an adequate job of explaining the different TOEFL questions and tasks, we found several important TOEFL test-taking strategies missing in the lessons.
For example, in the listening section of the self-paced course material, you will not find any in-depth strategies on how to take and organize notes. Neither would you find any discussion about the typical answer traps that appear in the reading and listening sections.
Based on this, we rank the quality of the lessons found in the self-paced course material to be below those you'll find in other self-paced TOEFL courses.
Live online classes
Now, this is where E2Language beats every other TOEFL prep course provider. As most test prep providers don't offer live online classes as part of their TOEFL prep course.
Users of all E2 TOEFL course packages can register for and attend live TOEFL classes at any point during their access period. However, the number of live class registrations a user can make will depend on the type of course package purchased as described earlier.
These 1-hour live classes are hosted on Zoom and begin at either 5 AM Australian Eastern Time (AET) or 3 PM AET every day from Tuesday to Friday. The weekly live class schedule follows a sequence of 7 classes, in the order of TOEFL Writing, TOEFL Reading, Spelling, TOEFL Speaking, Pronunciation, TOEFL Listening, and English Grammar.
During each live lesson, the instructor will focus on a sub-topic within one of these 7 broader topics. For example, in a live lesson on TOEFL Reading, the instructor may focus on teaching inference and vocabulary questions - both of which are 2 of the 10 types of questions found in the reading section.
Similarly, in a live lesson on TOEFL speaking, the focus of the day could be on strategies for the first integrated speaking task - which is usually based on a discussion between two university students.
So, don't expect the lesson in each class to be the same from one week to another.
The structure of the live classes for the 4 TOEFL sections was a mixture of section-specific strategies, live examples, and practice drills for the audience to attempt. The strategies taught in the live classes were quite in-depth and filled the learning gaps we identified in the self-paced course material.
The biggest complaint I had about the live classes has to do with the scheduled time.
Users of this course who live in Western time zones - such as in the Americas - would find it inconvenient to attend the classes on Spelling, Grammar, and Pronunciation. While students who live in Eastern time zones - such as in India and China - may find it inconvenient to attend the lessons on the 4 TOEFL iBT sections.
But don't worry, if these live class times don't fit your schedule, you can always watch a recording of the live class you missed on the course platform.
We would have liked to see multiple lessons held at different times of the day. However, we understand that these scheduling flexibilities would result in a much higher price for the E2 TOEFL course packages.
Nonetheless, I personally enjoyed these live classes, as the instructor was very knowledgeable about the TOEFL exam and did a great job of keeping participants engaged. We were constantly encouraged by the instructor to ask questions at any point during the lecture by either leaving a message in the chat or requesting permission from the instructor to speak up.
These live classes provide a perfect opportunity to receive clarification from a TOEFL expert in real-time. You can think of them as being equivalent to the office hours of a professor or a teacher. I highly recommend you attend a live class if you purchase this course.
Students who have access to the optional 1-on-1 tutoring (which users of the Express and Intensive packages can buy later) can schedule an appointment with an E2Language teacher.
When scheduling an appointment, you will be asked to provide a maximum of 2 tasks that you want the teacher to focus on. This online tutorial will be hosted on Zoom and usually lasts for about 45 minutes.
To get the most use of your time with the TOEFL teacher, it's important that you come well prepared for the appointment.
Unlike the TOEFL live classes that are directed by the E2 instructor, these tutoring sessions are directed by the student. This 1-on-1 appointment is your opportunity to choose what you want to be taught and for how long.
During my online tutoring session, we discussed how to take notes effectively using shorthand writing and how to organize notes properly on the listening, speaking, and writing sections. These were some of the tips and strategies that were not properly addressed in the self-paced course material.
We also discussed how to identify answer traps in the summary questions that appear in the reading section. Here, the instructor took the time to show a live example, exposing different traps that are common in the summary answer choices.
Given the limited time, the instructor suggested and provided additional resources that teach how to take notes using shorthand writing, as well as other TOEFL practice resources. You can also request a recording of the 1-on-1 tutoring session, which you can reference later in your prep.
Overall, the quality of the tutoring session was really good. The instructor I had taught in a very engaging manner and I could tell that she genuinely cared about the success of her students.
I was quite pleased with the quality of attention I received from the TOEFL instructor and would recommend at least one optional tutoring session to anyone who purchases the E2 TOEFL course.
Upon signing up for the paid E2 TOEFL course, you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire. After that, you will be shown a "How To Use" video, where an instructor explains how to navigate the platform. You can also find this same instructional guide at the top navigation.
From the home page of the course platform, you can view and register for the next live classes and view your study pathway. The study pathway shows you a list of the lessons, practice questions, and activities in the self-paced course material that you've either completed or you're yet to complete.
Other features of the platform such as the recorded live classes, 1-on-1 tutoring, and the graded assessments can be easily located from the dashboard.
Compared to other TOEFL course providers who send graded feedback to the user's email address, we liked that we could easily find information about the E2 TOEFL support features on the platform without digging through our email inbox.
Overall, the user experience on the E2 platform is quite pleasant when accessing the website on both a desktop and a mobile device.
Review of E2Language TOEFL Practice Questions & Tests
Practice questions in lessons and drills
In the self-paced course material section, you will find practice questions and activities within each lesson module for the reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections. There are about 190 practice questions and activities, with most of the practice questions present in the reading and listening lesson modules.
The practice questions found in the speaking lesson module, contain 2 prompts for each of the 4 speaking tasks (1 independent task and 3 integrated tasks). While those on the writing lesson module only contain 2 prompts for the independent writing task.
The self-paced course material also contains 6 mini-practice tests at the end of the reading section and 12 mini-practice tests at the end of the listening section.
The mini practice tests in the reading section contain a short reading passage and a maximum of 7 questions. While the mini practice tests in the listening section are based on either a conversation or a lecture and contain about 5 questions.
Combined, these reading and listening mini practice tests provide an additional 102 practice questions.
Furthermore, in the self-paced course material, there is a mock test module that contains 6 reading tests and 6 listening tests. In each reading test, you will find 3 reading passages with up to 30 questions.
While in each listening test, you will find 6 sections (3 lectures and 3 conversations), containing a total of 30 questions. That's an additional 340+ practice questions.
While the reading mock tests are timed - counting down from 1 hour - the listening mock tests are not timed. So, you will not be getting a realistic practice test experience on the listening mock tests.
The mock test module is the only part of the course where you can find full-length practice questions for the reading and listening sections.
On the mock test, we found the difficulty level of the reading and listening questions to be similar to those on the real TOEFL iBT. Similarly, the available practice questions in the speaking and writing learning modules are formatted in a comparable way to those on the real TOEFL iBT exam.
Full-length practice test experience
As mentioned earlier, the E2 TOEFL course only offers 1 short-length practice test, which they call a mini mock test. The mini mock test lasts for about 1 hour and 40 minutes, and is designed to give you a feel for what the real TOEFL iBT exam will be like.
The content on the mini mock test is as follows:
- Reading Section - 1 reading passage with 10 questions
- Listening Section - 1 conversation with 5 questions and 1 lecture with 6 questions
- Speaking Section - 1 independent and 3 integrated tasks
- Writing Section - 1 integrated task and 1 independent task
Once you begin the mini mock test, there will be a countdown timer running. After submitting your answers for each section, the next section will begin until all 4 sections are completed. There is no break between the listening and the speaking section in this mini mock test.
Apart from the countdown timers that keep running while you take the mini mock test, the practice test environment does not have the same look as what you'll see on the real TOEFL iBT exam. For example, the reading section lacks a review button that allows you to navigate to any of the questions in the section.
Given that the E2 TOEFL course lacks a full-length TOEFL practice test, we've rated E2 TOEFL lower than other TOEFL prep providers in the category of practice tests.
We highly recommend that users of this course supplement their TOEFL prep with authentic TOEFL practice questions from ETS. You can find these in official TOEFL resources such as the Official Guide to the TOEFL iBT or the Official TOEFL iBT Tests Volume 1 & 2.
Quality of answer explanations
The answer keys for the multiple-choice questions in the reading and listening sections lacked detailed explanations. You will only be shown which answer choice is correct, with no explanation for why that answer choice is correct and why other answer choices are incorrect.
We found this quite frustrating, as there were some answers in the reading mock test that did not make any sense. These insufficient answer explanations make for a poor learning experience with the E2 TOEFL practice material.
In our opinion, the E2 TOEFL course really underperforms here.
If you're looking for TOEFL practice questions with detailed answer explanations, no TOEFL course provider does a better job than Magoosh TOEFL.
With Magoosh TOEFL, you will not only find an in-depth explanation in a text format, but you will also find a video explanation breaking down each answer choice.
As described earlier, the level of support you will receive on the E2 TOEFL course depends on what package you purchase. Students using the Medal Packages receive between 1 - 3 tutoring sessions and between 4 - 12 graded speaking/writing assessments.
In addition, users of the Silver and Gold packages get a consultation session with a TOEFL expert. Where customized strategies for your TOEFL iBT exam day will be discussed.
While Gold package users also receive another consultation session discussing the next steps to take after receiving their official TOEFL iBT scores.
These consultation sessions give you an opportunity to get your TOEFL prep fine-tuned by a TOEFL expert leading up to the day of the TOEFL iBT exam.
Users of the Express and Intensive packages can always purchase additional support features on the platform for an extra fee without upgrading their plans to one of the Medal packages.
For example, the cost of a 45-minute tutoring session is $89, while a set of 4 speaking assessments or a set of 4 writing assessments can be purchased for $59.
In our experience using the graded assessment features, we were very delighted by the quality of feedback we received from the E2 TOEFL instructors. All assessments were received within 48 hours as promised.
You can see what our score report card for the independent speaking task looks like in the image below.
These score reports use the same scoring rubric as ETS - the makers of the TOEFL iBT exam. Where your speaking scores are rated from 0 - 4 in the areas of delivery, language use, and topic development. While your writing scores are rated from 0 - 5 in the areas of task fulfillment, organization, and language use.
The writing assessment from E2Language will also show your essay with spelling and grammatical corrections from the grader.
In addition to your scores in the key areas, the E2Language graders will also provide comments about your performance and give suggestions for improvement in the future.
We should also mention that the quality of the technical support from E2 was quite good. Whenever we sent an inquiry, we received an email response from an E2 representative within 24 hours.
Given all that the E2Language TOEFL course has to offer in this area, we believe that students who purchase this course will be very pleased by the quality of support.
E2Language TOEFL Pricing
The E2Language TOEFL course is priced at different levels depending on the number of support features available. The budget options are the Express packages starting as low as $59, while the support-rich Medal packages vary from $159 for the Bronze Package to $339 for the Gold Package.
Note that while E2Language is an Australian-based company, all prices referenced on their website and in this review article are in USD.
In addition, E2Language provides the option of making interest-free installment payments for any of the Medal Packages over a 3 month period. It's also quite common to find discounted offers as high as 20% on any of their TOEFL prep course packages.
When you consider the options that E2Language offers in each TOEFL course package, you'll find the prices of these packages to be very competitive.
For example, The Princeton Review offers TOEFL tutoring sessions for as low as $167/hour. While on E2 TOEFL, a cheaper amount of $159 gets you the Bronze package that includes access to a 45 minute 1-on-1 tutorial, graded assessments on the speaking and writing sections, and 6 months access to TOEFL live classes and on-demand video lessons and resources.
Other Features and Resources
Recorded live classes
On the E2 course platform, you will find a library of video recordings of the live online classes. This allows students in different time zones or students who have other obligations during the scheduled time to watch a replay of the live class on-demand.
However, these live recordings are only available on the platform for two weeks. After which they are taken down.
Access to E2 English
All course packages from E2 TOEFL come with free access to E2 Language's English learning course, appropriately named E2 English. On this platform, you will find English lessons that target students at different English proficiency levels.
The Trial, Score Improvement, and Money Back Policies
Availability of free trial
E2Language TOEFL offers a 30-day free trial that does not require your payment information to unlock. Making them the TOEFL test prep company with the longest free trial period.
However, this free trial period only allows you to:
- Register for 3 live online classes.
- Access 20 practice questions and 4 TOEFL lessons from their self-paced course material, and...
- Attempt 1 full-length reading practice set from their mock test practice section.
Note that the 3 live online classes available during this free trial period are limited to the classes on spelling, pronunciation, and grammar. Access to the live lessons on TOEFL test-taking strategies for the 4 sections of the TOEFL iBT will require an upgraded plan.
Score increase guarantee
While the folks at E2Language strongly believe their TOEFL course can help students improve their TOEFL scores, they do not promise any score improvement guarantees to students who complete the E2 TOEFL course.
This is unlike other test prep companies in the English language proficiency area. Competitors such as BestMyTest and PrepScholar both offer score increase guarantees as high as +15 points to your overall TOEFL score.
E2 TOEFL offers a 10-day money-back guarantee to paid customers who want to cancel the course. However, to be eligible for a refund, you must not use any of the resources in the paid course within the 10-day period after upgrading.
In addition, a $30 administration fee will be applied to any course purchase over $100, such as an upgrade to any of the Medal Packages.
From their perspective, they believe that a 30-day free trial should give a buyer more than enough time to explore the course and decide if this course is best for them before making a purchase.
Which E2Language TOEFL Prep Course Should You Get?
Given that all E2Language TOEFL packages comprise self-study course materials and live classes, your choice will be based on how much additional support you desire.
If you find that your current TOEFL scores are far away from your desired TOEFL score, and you need more time to prepare for the TOEFL, we'll recommend you go with the Silver or Gold package.
Both of these packages will not only give you a longer access period but you'll get more support through the expert tutoring sessions, TOEFL test-day strategy sessions, and more graded assessments.
However, if you're someone who does not need much support in your prep the Express+ package or the Bronze package would be your best bet!
