Let's take a close look at what these course packages have in common.

• Lessons and resources: All of these packages have the same TOEFL lessons that teach test-taking strategies for all 4 sections of the TOEFL iBT. As well as additional resources covering topics on English grammar and vocabulary building. 
• Practice tests: All plans have the same amount of practice questions and full-length practice tests.
• Extra support: With each plan, you can purchase additional support such as speaking and writing reviews, or the ability to ask a TOEFL instructor a question. 

BestMyTest TOEFL prep course distinctions

Here's where these packages differ from each other.

• Access period: As already mentioned, the Premium and the Last Minute plans can only be purchased for 6 months and 7 days of access respectively. While the Custom plan can be purchased in monthly increments from 1 to 6 months. 
• Support: The Custom plan - regardless of the length of access period purchased - has far fewer support compared to the Premium plan, which includes 10 graded writing and 20 graded speaking reviews. While the Last Minute plan does not include any speaking and writing support. 
• Pricing: The 7 day Last Minute plan is the cheapest option, while the Premium plan is the most expensive option. 

Lesson Quality

The TOEFL curriculum in this course really focuses on essential test-taking strategies for each of the 4 sections on the TOEFL iBT exam. The lessons on the reading and listening section do a good job of explaining the different types of questions in these sections. As well as discussing the appropriate strategy that's needed to answer each question type correctly. 

Similarly, lessons on the speaking and writing sections, go to great lengths explaining how to attack the different tasks on the integrated and independent portions of these sections. 

We like that after introducing new concepts in each lesson, a short exercise is provided which gives you the opportunity to practice what you've just learned. 

And after completing all lessons from each of the 4 sections of the TOEFL, you'll be prompted to take a Model-Practice test for that section of the TOEFL iBT which you've just completed.

These Model-Practice tests, draw questions from BestMyTest's large pool of TOEFL practice questions to give you the same number of questions or tasks you will find in the same section of the TOEFL iBT exam.

One feature of this course that stands out from other course providers is how vocabulary development is integrated into every practice section. For example, practice reading passages can be viewed in a vocabulary mode. In this reading mode you can quickly learn the definitions and pronunciation of certain words without leaving the webpage with the reading passage.

You will also find this vocabulary mode feature in the transcripts of audio recordings that appear in the listening, speaking, and writing practice sections. 

It is important to point out that the lessons in this course are presented as a conversational study guide. Instead of providing the information in each lesson using several blocks of text or in paragraphs, the information is provided in the form of a text conversation between two people. You and the TOEFL Tutor...

You are required to engage with the text - by clicking on a highlighted response - to move the lessons along. This makes reading the lessons somewhat interactive.

While this is a unique way of presenting information, it may be unsatisfactory to students who prefer to read content in several blocks of text. 

Occasionally, YouTube videos (as long as 25 minutes) from the BestMyTest YouTube channel are provided as a supplement to the lessons. These videos show a live instructor, who does a great job of teaching concepts in an engaging way. 

Overall, while the lessons in this course are very comprehensive, they are not ideal for learners who prefer watching lessons over reading lessons. This is the biggest complaint we have about the lesson quality in this course. 

We find from our experience that some lessons on TOEFL strategies are best taught in a video format. As certain concepts like note-taking skills for the listening, speaking, and writing sections are best demonstrated in a visual format. 

User Experience

The BestMyTest online platform is pretty straightforward to use on both a desktop and a mobile device. While BestMyTest does not offer any apps for TOEFL prep, they've designed their website to be just as user-friendly on mobile devices with small screens as it is on a desktop. 

When you log in to your account, you will be taken to the BestMyTest Dashboard shown in the image below. On this dashboard, you will find a summary of your average scores from all practice TOEFL sections that you've completed.

You will also find a Score Forecast - which charts how your scores have improved over time - and your Success Rate - which measures your performance in answering the different question types that appear on the reading and listening sections. 

Other parts of the platform containing the library of TOEFL practice questions, TOEFL lessons, and TOEFL vocabulary flashcards can be reached through a collapsible menu that appears on the left side of the screen on desktops and on the bottom of the screen on a mobile device. 

For students who have access to support features, you can use the Ask-an-Instructor or Test & Reviews tabs on the menu to easily communicate with a TOEFL instructor or review the status of your graded review request.

Unlike other TOEFL course providers, BestMyTest provides responses to all support requests directly on the online platform and not via email. This allows you to see the status of your request and any feedback received in one location. 

A minor complaint we had about the user experience was that navigating the large library of TOEFL lessons as a first time user could be overwhelming, especially when using a mobile device.

Nevertheless, the user experience across other sections of the platform is very well designed. Although some features of the course such as the TOEFL practice tests are best taken on a desktop computer, other features such as the TOEFL vocabulary flashcards are ideal for studying on the go using a mobile device. 

Review of BestMyTest TOEFL Practice Questions & Tests

Practice questions

In the area of TOEFL practice questions, BestMyTest stands out above the competition with a very large bank of TOEFL practice material for each section of the TOEFL.

Practice questions can be found in the TOEFL Questions section which contains 65 reading passages and 122 listening passages, both of which contain multiple questions, and over 400 speaking and 220 writing tasks. 

In addition, you will also get short practice exercises as you complete each lesson on the 4 TOEFL sections. 

Given such a large library of practice material, you shouldn't have much reason to look for additional practice material from TOEFL books or other resources. 

Keep in mind that questions on 16 out of the 20 full-length tests - titled Practice Tests - are recycled from the large bank of practice material. 

So, it's possible that while taking any of the 16 Practice Tests in the course, you might come across reading/listening passages or speaking/writing questions that you've attempted from the TOEFL Questions section. 

The other 4 full-length practice tests - titled Simulated Tests - have unique questions that don't appear anywhere else on the platform.

Practice test experience

The 20 full-length practice tests do a really good job of mimicking the TOEFL iBT exam environment. You will see similar buttons and features in each section of these practice tests, as there are on the real TOEFL iBT. 

As you complete each section of the practice test, you'll be prompted to move on to the next section. Students are expected to dedicate 3 hours of quiet time to complete each full-length practice test, just like they will do on the TOEFL test day. 

When we analyzed the difficulty of the practice questions on the BestMyTest TOEFL course to those on a real TOEFL iBT, we found them to be very similar.

To a degree, one could say that the questions on the reading and listening sections are a bit more difficult than those on the real TOEFL iBT. As there are many reading and listening questions that contain traps in the answer choices.

Comparing the independent and integrated tasks on the speaking and writing sections to those on the real TOEFL iBT exam, we found a really close match. As the questions in these sections have been designed to reflect the current format found in the modified TOEFL iBT.

At the end of each TOEFL practice test, BestMyTest generates a diagnostic report that breaks down how you performed on each test section. BestMyTest takes pride in designing these diagnostic report feature and believes that it allows its users to study efficiently and pass the TOEFL iBT with a high success rate.

Quality of answer explanations 

Explanation for the correct answer choice on the reading and listening sections are given with sufficient detail. However, we found the explanations for the incorrect answer choices on the listening section to be insufficient.

There are no detailed explanations for why the incorrect answer choices are indeed "incorrect" for many practice questions in the listening section. In addition, the answer explanations don't always state the type of reading or listening question that was asked. This might leave some students who desire more clarification to be frustrated.

As for the speaking and writing sections, you'll find sample responses in the form of audio recordings for the speaking task and essays for the writing task that show you what a high-scoring response to the question should be. 

Support

BestMyTest provides support on the platform in the form of grammar corrections on writing essays, graded reviews on speaking and writing practice tasks, and the ability to ask an instructor a question using the Ask-an-Instructor feature. 

But the amount of support that's included with a purchase of the course varies significantly from one plan to the other.

On the high end is the Premium plan, which comes with 25 essay grammar corrections, 25 Ask-an-Instructor questions, 20 speaking reviews, and 10 writing reviews. On the low end is the Last Minute plan that comes with only 1 essay grammar correction, and 5 Ask-an-Instructor questions. 

The Custom plan, even when purchased for 6 months of access, only comes with 5 essay grammar corrections, unlimited Ask-an-Instructor questions, 4 speaking reviews, and 2 writing reviews.

However, after signing up for any of the plans, you can get more graded reviews for the speaking and writing sections for an additional fee. For example, you can buy 20 speaking and 10 writing reviews for $160, or 2 speaking reviews and 1 writing review for $20. 

Support for the reading and listening sections is provided with a diagnostic report that breaks down how well you've answered each question type on the reading and listening section. 

To evaluate the quality of support in this course, we tested all 4 support features on multiple occasions. And we were pleasantly surprised at how thorough the graded speaking and writing assessments were. 

In each writing assessment, the instructor will provide grammatical corrections on your essay, as well as general comments on your performance and how you can improve your essays in the future. You will also find your writing score report that is similar to the writing report that's provided by ETS. 

As for the speaking assessment, you will receive an audio feedback from the TOEFL instructor, where the instructor provides commentary on your pronunciation mistakes and suggests improvements to your delivery.

The speaking assessment also includes a detailed score report that evaluates your performance on the same criteria that ETS uses to evaluate your spoken responses. The score report also contains general suggestions for improvement on each criteria.

All our requests for a graded speaking and writing assessment was provided within 24 - 48 hours. Which is the typical response time stated by BestMyTest. 

When using the Ask-an-Instructor and the Essay correction features, we liked that responses were provided very quickly, only taking a few hours on some occasions. However, we found most of these responses to be shallow. 

When we asked the instructor for clarification on some of the practice questions, the replies we received didn't add much value to what was already shown in the answer explanations.

Overall, we rate the quality of BestMyTest's TOEFL speaking and writing assessments to be one of the best on the market.  

BestMyTest TOEFL Pricing

The Last Minute plan is the cheapest plan starting at just $39. While the Premium plan is the most expensive at $219. Pricing for the Custom plan starts at $69 for 1 month of access up to $129 for 6 months of access.

Given the price structure of the Custom plan, it's more cost effective to purchase a 6-month access (at $21.5 per month of access) than a 1-month access at $69. 

BestMyTest does not offer any payment plans on its website and rarely advertises discount offers for these TOEFL courses. 

Compared to other course providers like Magoosh TOEFL and PrepScholar TOEFL, BestMyTest TOEFL is priced competitively but has more pricing flexibility. As they leave it up to the buyer to only pay for the amount of access and support features that they need.

Vocabulary flashcards

In addition to the lessons on vocabulary, BestMyTest also offers an interactive TOEFL vocabulary flashcard resource containing about 2000 words.

These flashcards not only define the words and provide a pronunciation but they also include a short audio snippet that gives examples of how to use these words in different sentences. 

Score Forecast and Success Rate Analysis features

After answering a certain number of practice questions, BestMyTest will display your performance on the course using the Score Forecast and Success Rate Analysis features.

The Score Forecast is a chart that predicts what score range you will get on the real TOEFL iBT exam, based on a history of your performance across all 4 sections of the TOEFL iBT. 

While the Success Rate Analysis tracks how well you've answered the different listening and speaking question types that appeared in the practice questions you've completed. It also suggests reading and listening section lessons from the course for your improvement.

Trial, Score Improvement, and Money Back Policies

Availability of free trial

BestMyTest offers a 7 day free trial with no credit card required. This free trial gives you access to:

• 20 practice questions from all 4 sections of the TOEFL
• 25 lessons covering topics on English grammar and the structure of the TOEFL exam
• Up to 5 Ask-an-Instructor questions
