Many graduate or business school hopefuls find themselves facing a common problem when it comes to standardized entrance exams like the GMAT.

Some are professionals who have been out of school for many years, and others may have graduated with a Social Sciences degree with little exposure to advanced math skills.

Either way, most test-takers are at least a little rusty on the skills that are required to ace the GMAT

Enter the world of GMAT test prep.

There are countless course options out there to consider when preparing to take the GMAT. One of the respected names for GMAT test prep is Magoosh and for a good reason.

Magoosh takes its approach to test prep entirely online, providing a dedicated mobile app, detailed video lessons, and access to loads of practice questions.

Better yet, all these resources are provided at a fraction of the price of other popular GMAT prep courses.

In this article, we will explore the GMAT prep options that Magoosh offers, discussing in detail some of the pros and cons of the course.

We also answer some of the most common questions that test-takers have when starting their journey to the GMAT.

Magoosh GMAT Prep Course Options

The Magoosh GMAT is 100% online, making it appealing to anyone hoping to study on their own schedule and have on-demand access to GMAT materials.

This is a huge advantage for working professionals, busy students, or anyone who needs to balance exam prep with other obligations.

Within their fully online format, Magoosh offers three different course options at affordable price points. Their plans start at under $220, which is one of the best values that you can find for quality GMAT exam prep courses.

The Self-Study Math + IR plan is for those who need to focus on just the areas where they need the most work rather than studying for all four parts of the GMAT. With this option, you get access to Math and IR content only.

The Self-Study Premium includes study materials for all four subjects on the GMAT (math, verbal, IR, and AWA). This is available in their standard package with one year of access, but they also have a 30-day option for Self-Study Premium.

This is a great option for anyone who doesn't have a lot of time before their exam, or who doesn't want to spend the full $250 for the package.

Magoosh also offers a Guided Study option, which includes the Self-Study Premium plan along with six hours of one-on-one tutoring via video chat.

Pros and Cons of Magoosh GMAT Prep Course

Any exam prep program has pros and cons. Some of them do certain things much better than their competition, while others miss the mark.

Understanding these advantages and disadvantages helps test takers make the best decision for where to invest not only their money, but (even more importantly), their time. Let's discuss some of the pros and cons of Magoosh when it comes to preparing for the GMAT.

Pros of Magoosh GMAT Prep Course

1. Competitive price: Magoosh is among the least expensive GMAT prep options out there, with the Self-Study program starting at under $220. That's a stark difference from some of their competition.

However, what makes the price point truly impressive is what you get for the money. Magoosh offers loads of value for the small fee that they charge. The content and materials are top notch, and you get access to over 1,300 practice questions.

Furthermore, Magoosh also offers payment plans for all their GMAT prep courses. So you can start your GMAT prep with a payment as low as $54.

In fact, the rest of these "pros" will continue to explain why Magoosh is where we found that you can get the most bang for your buck.

2. Access to online (and mobile) platform: Magoosh GMAT is 100% online, meaning that there are no lessons to attend in-person or hard copy prep materials. For many people trying to gain admission to business school, this piece is essential. Life doesn't stop just because you're preparing for the GMAT, so the ability to use Magoosh content on the go is a huge advantage.

Users can hop on and do a few practice questions or watch video lessons whenever they have some free time. Making dinner? Put the laptop up on the kitchen counter and play a prep video.

Waiting for the subway? Pull out your phone and do a few flashcards on their mobile app.

Magoosh offers access to their content online from a computer, or from any device with web-browsing capabilities. They also have a dedicated mobile app for iOS and Android.

3. Comprehensive video content: The videos could really be Pro #1 because they're that good. Unlike many other test prep options out there, Magoosh provides a video explanation for every question.

So, if you don't get the answer right (or, if you find yourself just guessing), you can review a short video that breaks down the solution and works it out for you.

A critical point that Magoosh does a great job explaining is that many GMAT questions do not require you to do long, difficult math calculations. Instead, they're designed to force you to think critically, make decisions that "make sense," and use basic skills.

The Magoosh GMAT videos point out these simple rules and fundamental concepts that make the questions easier to solve, saving you a lot of time.

In addition to the video explanations for the practice questions, there are loads of video lessons to explain all the various concepts you need to know to do well on the exam.

Magoosh makes it a point to teach users about effective GMAT strategy and how to recognize the different types of questions that you'll see on test day. Without these tips and tricks, students can miss out on valuable, time-saving strategies.

In fact, on their mobile app, there are tons of free video lessons and practice questions that you can use to study on the go without purchasing the entire program. This app is rated a 4.5/5 on the App Store.

Magoosh also publishes so many videos on their YouTube channel dedicated to GMAT, where you can find loads of free tips and prep materials for your GMAT journey.

4. Personalized study schedule: The lesson structure that Magoosh GMAT uses is a bit different than some of the other prep companies out there. They organize their lessons by topic, and it's up to you to decide where you want to focus your attention.

However, as you study and complete practice questions, Magoosh will begin to personalize your recommended study schedule.

The program will recognize which questions you miss and will let you know where you need to spend more time versus which areas you're performing very well.

In addition to the study recommendations, Magoosh also provides adaptive practice tests. Just like the actual GMAT, the questions on the practice exam may increase or decrease in difficulty based on your performance on the previous questions.

5. Score improvement guarantee: Many of the GMAT prep courses offer some sort of score improvement guarantee, but Magoosh boasts a 50-point score increase guarantee.

Of course, to qualify for this guarantee, there are certain criteria you have to meet, but who doesn't want to boost their score by 50 points?

Magoosh claims that users, on average, improve their GMAT scores by 90-points. A 50- to 90-point improvement for $250 is truly an incredible value.

6. One year of access: When you purchase one of the plans from Magoosh, you'll get one full year of access to their online content. That's great for anyone who wants to start preparing far in advance from when they plan to take the GMAT or for someone who may need to take the exam more than once.

Many other companies offer four or six months of online access.

So, if you end up not taking the GMAT during the timeline that you planned or you don't get the GMAT score that you hoped for, you could end up having to spend more money on additional prep materials.

But with Magoosh, the one-year access period offers users the added peace of mind that comes with truly being able to work at your own pace.

Cons of Magoosh GMAT Prep Course

1. Requires self-sufficiency: If you're the kind of person who needs accountability for effective studying, Magoosh GMAT might not be the best option. Magoosh is 100% online and completely self-paced. There's no one checking upon you to make sure you're staying on track.

Similarly, unless you purchase the tutoring option, there's no one teaching you new content. Though the videos are chock full of useful information, they're still just videos.

That means no asking for more clarification or requesting to see another example.

However, the ability to pause, re-watch, or slow down a video to better understand the explanation makes the Magoosh lessons superior to live instruction for some people.

It really just depends on your learning style and how good you are at holding yourself accountable.

2. May be less useful to test-takers with math backgrounds: We found Magoosh GMAT incredibly useful for reviewing concepts taught in high school and getting clarification on some topics that not every test taker has experience with.

However, suppose you're someone with a strong background in advanced mathematics. In that case, you may find Magoosh's material to be more simplistic than what you're looking for.

These sentiments were echoed on Reddit and Quora, where just a few users noted that those with science and math backgrounds may want something a bit more challenging.

3. Practice questions and practice tests: Magoosh GMAT provides two practice tests and a large bank of practice questions. Some other test prep companies such as The Princeton Review and Manhattan Prep offer more than just two practice tests.

However, Magoosh does offer a discount on purchasing additional official practice GMAT exams from MBA.com.

That being said, quality is much more important than quantity.

Overall, Magoosh offers a high-quality practice question bank. While the number of available questions is great, many users have reported that the difficulty is much greater than what you'll actually experience on the official exam.

In many ways, this is not a bad thing. You certainly don't want the opposite to be true, where you've prepared for easier questions only to find that the actual exam is far more challenging.

However, it can make it harder to truly understand the concepts and apply them when the questions are too complex. We also found that if you miss too many practice questions it can really shake your confidence.

Should you buy Magoosh GMAT Prep Course?

Magoosh's top-notch GMAT prep courses comes at a fraction of the price of some of their competitors. Their fully online platform and focus on high quality video instruction makes their program one of the best values out there.

According to the folks over at Magoosh, their programs are best suited for:

  • Self-starters who can manage their own time and prefer to study at their own pace.
  • Studiers who learn well through watching videos (as opposed to reading text or in-person instruction).
  • Professionals who are balancing test prep with career and other obligations.
  • Busy students who are don't have a lot of time to dedicate to GMAT prep.

Nevertheless, anyone looking to get in some quick video lessons and practice on their own schedule can benefit from what Magoosh has to offer. Their 50-point score improvement guarantee makes the investment more than worth it for most people, especially when you consider how expensive it is to take (and re-take) the GMAT.

For many applicants, a 50-point score difference could mean admission to a top choice school versus a second or third choice.

Given the perks Magoosh has to offer, we strongly recommend the Magoosh GMAT prep.

Magoosh offers a free seven day trial that will give you access to over 30 video lessons and 30 practice questions. They don't even require your credit card information to access the free trial content!
